Brown Bears in Finland
I am delighted to be running a trip to Finland in 2025 to photograph the Brown Bears together with my good friend and fellow photographer Paul Fowlie who has been leading trips to this region for several years. September sees the emergence of vibrant Autumn colours. The Bears are now well and truly getting ready for winter hibernation, and this is also a good time to see the Bears cubs as they accompany their mothers hunting for food.This is a spectacular time to photograph the Bears in rich autumn colours. This should be an amazing trip and if we are lucky we may even see wolves or the elusive worlverine. The total cost is £1470 (not including flights)  based on shared accommodation and a £300 non refundable deposit is required to secure your place with the remaining balance due 8 weeks before the trip.

  • Day 1

    We will meet at Kajaani airport in Finland, via Helsinki, where we will be met for an approximate 2-hour transfer to our accommodation. This will be our base for the duration of the trip.

    We will arrive too late for the first evening of bear photography, so after dinner we will have a chat about what is expected over the forthcoming days.

    Day 2

    Breakfast and dinner times will be advised on arrival.  There is a bird feeder near our accommodation to fill in some time. For the rest of the week, you will have plenty of time to edit your photos during the day

    We will head out to hides at approx 3pm and return between 8pm and 9pm as the nights get dark early in September.

    You will visit 3 different hides over the next 3 days, and on your last day you will have the chance to choose one that you have previously visited. We have the woodland hide set amongst pine trees, a swamp hide, and a pond hide which can give excellent reflections of the bears on a calm evening.

    Days 3, 4 & 5

    These days will follow the same routine as day 2.

    Day 6

    Breakfast will be served as usual, then you will have time to shower and pack your belongings, before heading back to Kajaani airport for your return flight.

    Equipment

    • Digital DSLR or Mirrorless System
    • Lenses – 100mm – 500mm is ideal
    • 100-400mm
    • Gimbal or Ballhead required (no tripod/monopod)
    • Spare batteries and memory cards

    Clothing

    This is our list of suggested clothing to bring for this workshop.

    • Good warm waterproof Jacket and trousers, preferable with quiet material
    • Waterproof walking boots
    • Extra layer like a fleece or light thermal jacket
    • Warm hat & gloves.
